India vs Sri Lanka 2024: Key Changes in Squad Players from SA ODI Series

Big changes in the personnel as we look the India vs Sri Lanka 2024 squad list in comparison to the South Africa ODI series. 

Ever since India lost the 2023 ODI World Cup final, the 50-over format has been given the least importance by the Indian team. Ignoring the reason why the format has been given the least importance, what’s more important is that since November last year, India have played only one ODI series. The upcoming ODI series vs Sri Lanka shall be their second ODI series with the last being played vs SA in December.

Given the time gap in terms of the ODI series, we are seeing a lot of changes in the personnel of Team India for the Sri Lanka ODI series as compared to the 2023 South Africa ODI series. The Sri Lanka series marks the beginning of Gautam Gambhir’s tenure as the Head Coach of the Indian team, and even if we don’t see it, there will be personal bias in terms of the players he would want in the squad.

There were a lot of new players being chosen for the SA ODI series with many senior players being rested. Even with that, we still saw some fighting performances from most of the quality players. But what are the key changes that have happened in the Sri Lanka ODI squad for Team India as compared to the squad that played against South Africa? Well, let’s find out in this article.

India vs Sri Lanka 2024 ODI Squad – Key Changes

If we look at the overall squad composition, there were 16 players in the SA ODI series as compared to the standard 15 players in the Sri Lanka ODI series. While KL Rahul led the squad in South Africa, he is not even designated as the Vice-captain of the side for the Sri Lanka ODI series. Instead, Rohit Sharma returns as the Captain of the side, and Shubman Gill has been appointed as the Vice-captain for the Sri Lanka ODI series. 

As compared to the squad that played in South Africa, the Sri Lanka ODI squad sees as many as 10 players being dropped from the side. The ones who have been dropped are Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar, Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mukesh Kumar, Avesh Khan, and Akash Deep. These are big changes in the side as we are seeing new faces along with the return of a few senior players too.

If we look at the Sri Lanka ODI series squad, the ones that are making a comeback are Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill (vc), Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant (wk), Riyan Parag, Shivam Dube, Harshit Rana, Khaleel Ahmed, and Mohammed Siraj. As we can see, as many as 9 players are making a comeback. From these 9 players, Riyan, Shivam, Harshit, and Khaleel are new names in the ODI format.

So, that’s about the complete changes in Team India’s squad for the ODI series vs Sri Lanka. As we can see, it is a complete overhaul in the squad, and under Gautam Gambhir, India are looking at the Champions Trophy 2025 already. However, the squad is still without a few key players like Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, and Mohammed Shami.
